Collaborative Practice is a voluntary out-of-court process for you and your spouse to resolve the legal, financial and emotional issues of your divorce or separation. You and your spouse are represented by collaboratively trained attorneys. These attorneys are disqualified from representing you in court. Successful teams include coaches for each spouse, the use of a child specialist, and trained divorce financial advisers.

Collaborative Practice California’s (CPCal) eleventh annual state wide conference recently concluded at the Sofitel Hotel in Redwood City. This year’s conference saw the largest attendance of any year in CPCal’s history, pronounced CPCal President, Sean Weber. Leading the way was the contingency from LACFLA led by yours truly, Leon F. Bennett.
The weekend’s activities commenced Friday with the Pre Conference Institute, which included advanced collaborative training provided by State and Nationally known Collaborative Professionals. The Conference of Delegates held their annual meeting, where they conducted the business of the organization, including the election of the 2016-17 Board of Directors. LACFLA member, Doug Rosner (Collaborative Probate and Estate Planning Attorney) was elected to the CPCal Board. Congratulations Doug!
The faculty for the weekends work shops included many LACFLA members, including Fred Glassman, Warren Sacks, Joe Spirito, Doug Rosner, Jami Fosgate ,Ria Severance, Mary Ann Aronsohn, Jaye-Jo Portnova, James Walton, Jena Stara, David Kuroda, Vi Ballard, Judy Colish, Paula March, Gloria Flores-Cerul, Lisa Rapoport, and more.
At Conference XI two LACFLA members received the prestigious Eureka Award for outstanding service to the Collaborative Community. Mary Ann Aronsohn and Lisa Zonder were this years recipients. Well deserved. Lisa Zonder was also sworn in as CPCal President for the 2016-17 term. Congratulations Mary Ann and Lisa.
During the Conference, Fred Glassman announced that the California Commission on Uniform State Laws has elicited his assistance in connection with adding California to the list of States enacting the Uniform Collaborative Law Act. Good luck Fred. We are all behind you.
Outgoing President Shawn Weber announced the launch of an extensive public relations and marketing campaign that will promote Collaborative Dispute Resolution Statewide.
Attendees were treated to a Video Conference with CPCals Marketing Specialist, who laid out the multi dimensional and multimedia approach being implemented. CPCal is calling on all members to donate to the campaign. The fund raising commenced with the Delegates deciding to donate their $50 stipends back to CPCal for the marketing campaign. In total, CPCal hopes to raise over $120,000 to promote CDR.
All in all, it was a fabulous educational experience and an incredible opportunity to exchange ideas with Collaborative Professionals from all over California. Here are some pictures of our LACFLA contingency at CPCal Conference XI.

Joe has been managing family law cases for over 29 years and is a founding partner of McGaughey & Spirito in Redondo Beach California. He has continuously maintained an AV rating in Martindale-Hubbell and is listed in the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers, as well as the National Register’s Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals.
Joe has chaired the Family Law Section of the South Bay Bar Association for several years and is Past President of the South Bay Bar Association. He is currently serving on the Executive Committee of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, Family Law Section, and is a faculty member of the Los Angeles Collaborative Law Association’s interdisciplinary training programs.
Joe is a founding member of A Better Divorce, a collaborative law divorce group in the South Bay, and has handled over 100 collaborative law cases. In 2001, as Chair of the Family Law Section of the South Bay Bar Association, Joe co-initiated a program with L.A. County Supervising Family Law Judge, Aviva Bobb, utilizing her courtroom to put on a program with Pauline Tesler and Nancy Ross. The program introduced the collaborative divorce model to approximately 100 attorneys, judges and mental health professionals in the county.
Joe has served as Judge Pro-Tem and Mediator in the Los Angeles County Superior Court.
Joe has also been named a Southern California Super Lawyer for 2005 -2011. Only 5% of the Southern California lawyers are selected for this honor.
